Babcock has been awarded a prestigious contract by Arqiva to install low power Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) transmitter cabins at television relay sites as part of the UK programme to deliver Digital Switchover (DSO).  Arqiva is responsible for the roll out of Digital Terrestrial TV to 98.5 per cent of the UK population between 2008 and 2012.

The TV relay cabins being delivered by Babcock will help facilitate the delivery of DSO to rural areas, complementing the coverage from the UK’s main TV transmitting sites. Leveraging its broad expertise in wireless infrastructure, engineering and programme management, Babcock will deliver everything required to ensure the success of this programme. This includes project management, logistics, low power transmitter cabins and associated system integration, and asset decommissioning.

Marios Zapitis, DSO Implementation Director at Arqiva commented: “We are extremely proud to be involved with DSO in the UK and we are working to some very tight timescales in order to roll-out Digital Terrestrial TV by 2012. In order to achieve this in line with Government timescales we must ensure that we are working with partners, such as Babcock, which provide best value and efficiency for this vast engineering project.”

Bryan Coombes, Director of Business Development at Babcock said:  “Babcock’s involvement with Arqiva in DSO further solidifies the partnership between the two organisations, and demonstrates Babcock’s appetite and capability for both UK and international wireless network infrastructure programmes, which is core to Babcock’s strategic direction.”
